We Are the Metaphor

Imagine seeing a person mistaking the sign for a city. If you saw a road-weary man on the edge of I65 hugging the “Welcome to Birmingham” sign and unpacking his trunk at its base to enjoy his stay in this wonderful city, you would think he was loony. The sign is not the city. He has lost his vantage point. We are wrong with the world, in part, because we have lost our vantage point. We have believed that WE are the truth, and life, spirituality, and all other things point to our meaning. Perhaps that confusion has led us to think that we have no meaning. As the sign can never carry all the goodness of the city, so we cannot convey all the meaning that we mean. Instead, we point to it. “God is the truth, we are the Metaphor.” We despair that the world does not give us ultimate meaning, when we were meant to display meaning to world. Like fish, swimming relentlessly in search of water, we are the sign in search of the city we point to, unaware of our own meaning. You were made to point people to God. You are a metaphor with a truth to tell. People read in you the words, “Heaven and Earths creator ahead” and they prepare for something wonderful.
